Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Nollywood, Nigeria’s thriving film industry, has become one of the largest in the world, with a significant influence on both national and international audiences. Over the years, Nollywood has developed a reputation for producing a diverse range of films that touch on various aspects of Nigerian society, including politics, governance, social issues, and cultural traditions. In Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, where community leaders play a pivotal role in guiding societal norms and practices, the adoption of Nollywood films for civic education could significantly influence how these leaders engage with and educate their communities. Civic education through films is a powerful medium, offering an effective way of conveying messages about democratic values, governance, legal rights, social responsibility, and ethical conduct in an easily understandable format. Nollywood films, which are widely consumed in Nigeria, have the potential to serve as a vital tool for community leaders to engage citizens in meaningful discussions about their rights, responsibilities, and participation in national development (Obi, 2023). However, the extent to which Nollywood films are adopted for civic education, particularly among community leaders in rural areas such as Wase, remains underexplored. This study seeks to explore the adoption of Nollywood films for civic education in Wase Local Government Area, investigating how these films are utilized by community leaders in promoting civic engagement, active participation in governance, and the enhancement of democratic values.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing prominence of Nollywood films as a source of entertainment and cultural expression, their role in civic education remains underutilized, particularly in rural areas. Community leaders in Wase Local Government Area, though central to shaping the political and social fabric of their communities, may not fully recognize the potential of Nollywood films in advancing civic education. This gap in knowledge and application could hinder the ability of these leaders to utilize films as an accessible tool for fostering awareness about electoral processes, governance, and community development. Furthermore, while Nollywood films often tackle themes related to governance, justice, and societal values, the adoption and integration of these films into civic education programs remain unclear. This study aims to address this gap by examining how Nollywood films are being adopted by community leaders in Wase Local Government Area for the purpose of civic education, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with their use in this context.
